Let me put this out there…I never thought I was an artist. I am a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified health coach with my own business Neily on Nutrition. I help people improve their health and age gracefully.

My mom—appropriately named Monet—has created art since she was young. Visiting home she was showing me some of her work with alcohol ink on tiles. I loved the look and asked her to teach me how she created them. 

For several days I unleashed my inner artist and created a few hand-painted tiles. Then I returned to Dallas and on with life.

In early January my oldest brother was diagnosed with cancer. It was devastating to my family and I needed a therapeutic outlet. I invested in some inks and started creating.

And haven’t stopped.  

I have always believed we all have an artist inside us, it’s just how it shows up!!!” -someone posting on Facebook

I wasn’t sure about posting on social media…what if people thought I should stick with my day job—which I absolutely love—I got the courage and posted on Instagram and Facebook with the message:

“Inspired by my mom I’ve let my creative side sneak out this month. Mom taught me how to paint with alcohol ink over Christmas and I’ve become a wee obsessed making these coasters. It’s wonderful therapy. I’ve hesitated to post pix because I’ve never had much talent with art. But creating these brings me joy.”

The response was overwhelmingly positive.

BABY STEPS

I ended up with the page @UniquelyNeily on Instagram and also bought the domain Uniquely Neily. Although I’ve not posted yet, there will be a store coming on Etsy. Baby steps.

BUT…what to do with the abundance of tile coasters I’ve created?

Although nutrition is my career passion—I would never give it up—my art endeavors are a blessing.

One last thing, I have a Great Dane, Lex, who is now a registered therapy dog. For many years I’ve fostered many gentle giants through Great Dane Rescue of North Texas.

Lex is the third Dane I’ve rescued and keeps me company in my home office. He is now a registered therapy dog and as a team we love making people happy putting smiles on faces.
